PROGRAM OVERVIEW
The landscape of genetic testing and treatment for inherited retinal diseases (IRDs) is rapidly evolving. Keeping up to date on clinical trials, ordering and interpreting genetic test results, and knowing how and when to best collaborate with genetic counselors can be a challenge for ophthalmologists, retina specialists, and optometrists. In this interactive activity, experts in retinal disease and genetic counseling discuss challenges and opportunities to enhance collaborative patient care, including 2 compelling IRD cases.
TARGET AUDIENCE
- General ophthalmologists
- Pediatric ophthalmologists
- Retina specialists
- Optometrists
- Genetic counselors
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this activity, learners should be better able to:
- Describe the clinical and genetic heterogeneity observed in IRDs
- Identify patients for whom genetic testing for IRDs is appropriate and who may qualify for inclusion in current clinical trials
- Facilitate genetic testing for patients with suspected IRDs based on their ocular work-up and family history
- Collaborate with genetic counselors to support patient learning about IRD genetic testing and their results
