Identifying needs

The discovery phase of creating a grant request involves thoughtful review of existing literature, guidelines and health data to establish gaps in knowledge and practice.

We focus on clinical problems, practices and obstacles to change. We engage the medical professionals most familiar with the relevant real-world clinical landscape to familiarize ourselves with the forces, attitudes and obstacles surrounding treatment.

The initial analysis might involve:

  • Interviews with experts.
  • Online surveys with the target audience.
  • Regional needs assessment.

From this vantage point, we can better identify specifics:

  • What are the needs of the learners?
  • What are the gaps in clinical competencies?
  • What are the barriers to best practices?

The Needs Assessment Sample

GAP
Clinical Practice Gap

The rates of annual eye examinations remain low for people with diabetes
Source: Expert data (literature review); Observed data (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Health Interview Survey, Healthy People 2010)

NEEDS
Educational Needs

PCPs and endocrinologists need to recognize the impact that DR and DME have on their patients’ HRQL

PCPs and endocrinologists need to be aware of available therapies for DME

PCPs and endocrinologists need to facilitate referrals of their patients to eye care providers for annual eye examinations

OBJECTIVES
Learning Objective That Will Address the Gap and Need

Incorporate tools to assess the impact of DR on patients’ HRQL

Describe the efficacy and safety data for laser, steroid, and anti-VEGF therapies for DME

Use strategies to facilitate patient referrals for annual eye examinations and enhance communication with eye care providers

  2. Changes in their responses to the same posttest questions
  1. Ability to meet learning objectives; Changes they plan to make in their practices as a result of participating in this activity
  2. If they implemented their planned changed in practice

METRICS
